| adidas College Showcase Tournament |
|
The 2008 Men's College Cup was played at Pizza Hut Park. The December 14 final had the University of Maryland beating University of North Carolina 1-0.
The AYSES 91 Gold and AYSES 92 Gold competed in the adidas College Showcase Tournament. A showcase tournament is a tournament where players are "showcased" for the college coaches. The coaches attend to view potential or existing recruits. Typically, both the head and assistant coaches will attend. The coaches are from all levels of colleges, D1 to D3. The goal of the player is to show well for these coaches and, subsequently, secure a college scholarship. A scholarship may be comprised of athletic and academic scholarships. It is rare to get a 100% scholarship meaning the parents pay nothing. (Parents: The AYSES club has experience with this process.)
The AYSES 92 Gold made it to the finals! Big ups to Coach Danny and his 92s!

| Observations by a Soccer Dad... an AYSES Soccer Dad |
|
Coach Sammy coaches both our sons, 91, Josh, and a 94, Jordan. AYSES style of soccer is easily recognized as the "beautiful game". When our 91 son came to play for Coach Sammy at age 11, Shari and I wanted to do nothing but win. To borrow a phrase from Al Davis, past owner of the Oakland Raiders, "just win, baby!". Josh really, really wanted to play AYSES style of soccer. Before coming to the AYSES, Josh played against the AYSES. Shari and I were not soccer literate and were concerned with going with the AYSES, a Classic Division 2 team, as Josh had offers to play for the top Classic Division 1 teams.
A quandry to be sure for Shari and me but not Josh. A friend, Coach Ruben Urcuyo (who was to become an AYSES Coach), framed the decision simply, "go with the AYSES and you'll never look back". We talked frequently with Coach Sammy too. Coach Sammy knew Josh and explained perfectly to us of Josh's soccer style, his play, and where Josh would have problems. We have never looked back and never will.
When we came to the AYSES, Coach Sammy would state "winning is not everything". I would discuss this with Coach Sammy as it appeared that Coach Sammy did not quite have the proper focus on winning as I liked (I admit I presently know little to nothing of coaching and especially coaching soccer at an elite level to elite players - I knew even less at that time). However, Coach Sammy was patient with me and enlightened me to the "development" of a player. Sure, Coach Sammy could coach a kick and run and pure power soccer but Coach Sammy wanted skilled players who understand the game. For those close games, Coach Sammy could have tactically coached to win the game but at a sacrifice of development. I came to know, understand, and accept that "winning is not everything".
Over the years, I have heard Coach Sammy give his "winning is not everything" schpeel to the new teams' parents. Though that is a short, four word phrase, it has incredible depth and breadth which I came to understand over the years. And you will too.
We are so thankful for Coach Sammy's persistence to sticking with development and his patient mentoring of us AYSES parents. Being a part of the AYSES family is rewarding beyond my capability of expressing it here. It never amazes me that good people manage to find other good people.

| AYSES Soccer Complex - Progressing as Planned |
|
|
Plans for the construction of AYSES Soccer Complex are proceeding as planned.
The complex will be built in phases. Phase I of the complex which is located on the west side of the property and consists of the six fields, club house, lake, parking and fun area among other things, will be built in two phases. The first part of phase I will be completed by in the fall. The phase will include the construction of six irrigated soccer fields, well, lake, parking and lights. The lights will be ready before November 2008 just when they will be needed.
The remainder of phase I will be completed by September 2009 and will include everything in phase I that will not have been built. This will include the club house, picnic area and fun area. Right after completion of phase I, construction of phase II and then III will begin.
Having our own soccer complex is a huge step! It will be the club’s home, as opposed to, our nomadic existence of today. The AYSES Soccer Complex will embody everything compromising the AYSES family: the club, teams, players, and parents. This is a proud time to be an AYSES.
We will keep updating you on the progress of the facility via email and the AYSES website.

| Fundraising For AYSES Soccer Complex |
|
As you all know, building a soccer facility of the caliber of AYSES Soccer Complex is very expensive. Every help we can get will go a long way in offsetting the cost of bringing the project to life. More importantly your contribution will help build something that will help many youths leave a healthy life for many years to come.
Listed below are the ways you can contribute to the project:
- Financial contribution of any amount: There will be three levels of recognition for financial contribution. If you contribute $100.00 and below, you will be recognized as a Silver Level contributor. If you contribute between $100.00 and $1,000, you will be recognized as a Gold Level contributor, and if you contribute $1,000.00 and above, you will be recognized as a Platinum Level contributor. All contributors will have their names displayed prominently in the AYSES Club House based on their level of contribution. This will be a permanent feature of the facility, and you can some day share with your grandchildren that you helped make AYSES Soccer Complex a reality.
- Contributing a tree: Trees will be an important feature of the AYSES Soccer Complex. The plan is to have every soccer field surrounded by trees. We believe that having trees contribute positively to the environment, provide shade and gives the complex the look and feel of more than just a soccer facility. We will therefore be taking contributions in the form of trees. These trees will be positioned in different locations within the facility depending on the type of tree you contribute. The tree will be named after you, your family or whoever you wish. You will engrave that name on the tree. That tree will be there for many years to come, and will be there as a testimony to your contribution to the facility.
- Buy a Brick: You can contribute $100.00 towards the purchase of a brick that will be used to build the Club House. You will be recognized as a Bronze Level contributor, and your name will be displayed in the Club House as such.
- Provide expertise: We could use all the expertise we can get. If you can provide your service in any way, shape of form, we will very much appreciate it. Some of the AYSES parents have done so much to get us to this point by providing services that would have cost thousands of dollars. You may be an architect, landscape expert, or a builder. We need you. We will recognize you accordingly.
- Business Sponsorship: If you own a business, you can contribute or purchase advertisement. Please call for more information.
